I was sent this link the other day by my friend Max over in Italy. He’s handling the Euro distribution of one of my hoodies as well as other fine Upper PLayground merch. Here we have my “Dutch, Smash!” on a green sweatshirt. Some great modeling pics as well as a nice little write-up. Thanks, MAXIEMILLION!

Monday morning I am opening up my art sale that I’ve been mentioning for some time. I got the sketchbooks from the printers and they look great! REMEMBER… the only way you can get one of these 15 signed/numbered/custom illustration sketchbooks is by purchasing something from the art sale. It comes free with any one purchase big or small. It’s 40 pages full color and slammed full of goodies. Where else can you find a limited sketchbook like this with Smurfs, a Liger and a whole ton of other cool shit in it? Yeah… here. It’ll be a first come-first served art sale. E-mail me what you want, secure it with me and it’s all yours.
Outside Lands Music Festival
Posted in Uncategorized with tags art, illustration, juxtapoz magazine, mural, N8, n8 van dyke, N8vandyke, nate van dyke, Outside Lands Music Festival, painting, pen and ink, sam flores, upper playground on August 15, 2011 by n8vandykeIt’s been a long weekend. I was hired along with a handful of other artist friends to do live painting for JUXTAPOZ at this 3-day music festival. I ended up painting with my buddy, Sam Flores on a couple murals. We ended up working on Friday and Sunday (resting on Saturday).
We got there before it all opened on Friday so we could set up and get a feel for it before all the crowd got there. We were set up on the Polo Grounds in Golden Gate Park here in SF. It was your typical festival with big crowds, constant music, more port-o-potties than I’ve ever seen in my life, $9 beers and so on.
We had a wall set up near these huge windmills which made for a pretty cool entrance.
The walls we were painting on were laid out in a triangle shape with artists on each side and each wall measured 8′x24′
The day before I decided I’d do a drawing, take it to Kinko’s to blow it up, wheat paste it and then just paint over it. I knew it would be hot and crowded so I didn’t want to have to think too hard there and rather have fun. I ended up doing a drawing of an orangutan hunched over and drawing on the ground.
I pasted it up and made Sam sweat a bit because by posting up the drawing I had instant results and he got to play catch up. The idea I came up with was this orangutan is drawing a bunch of chicken scratch but what he sees in his head is beautiful (Sam handled what he saw in his head). Here we are getting it going.
I didn’t get as many progress shots as I’d like because it was so easy to get caught up working and talking to people. SF Gate did, however. They are the local newspaper website for the SF Chronicle and they got a progress shot of it when they were covering the festival.
Here it is pretty much wrapped up…
Now for the finishing touch…
We almost always had a decent crowd around us hanging out and watching the progress..
On Sunday Sam and I returned and collaborated on a whole new wall. I stuck with what worked and made another orangutan poster. I stuck with the orangutan because people seemed to dig it and… because I had plenty of orange paint left from Friday. I didn’t get any progress shots on this one. We’ll fast forward to the end result…
Sam did a girl with a dragon head dress behind it.
Here was our view of the main stage.
More. People.
Transformers
Posted in Uncategorized with tags Double-decker bus, england, illustration, MUNI, muniformer, N8, n8 van dyke, nate van dyke, pen and ink, San Francisco, transformers, upper playground on December 10, 2010 by n8vandykeI came across these files the other day and got a little misty-eyed. The reason for that is because I did these Transformer t-shirt graphics and they never got used… which makes no sense to me. I was asked to make transformers out of a double-decker bus from England and the San Francisco bus (MUNI). I did these graphics three years ago and I think they still hold up today. I have a buddy who is working on set on the current film (as well as having done the other two) and I know he would have probably been living in the shirts during filming. I even put his initials on the MUNI license plate. Both would have been huge sellers. Let me know what YOU think…
CORRECTION: I found out that these shirts DID get made but in a really small print run. They flew out the door in no time. I was told that there is a possibility that they may get reprinted. I’ll be sure to keep posted on this.
9/18/10 Live painting, sketching, signing, print etc. SF! 1pm-?
Posted in Uncategorized with tags alex pardee, art, chimp, hamburger hill, illustration, live painting, N8, n8 van dyke, nate van dyke, painting, poster, upper playground, zero friends on September 17, 2010 by n8vandykeCrap. I had no idea what to title this post so I decided to make it as ugly as I could. So, the short of it is this…
This Saturday I will be hanging with my buds at Zero Friends at their 2-month pop-up-shop in SF. It’s located right by Upper Playground. I’ll be there with my little buddy, Alex Pardee. We are going to collaborate on a painting in the store for all to see. I will also be signing people’s foreheads and doing sketches.
As if that wasn’t lame enough I am also going to be releasing a limited signed/numbered print of my piece, Hamburger Hill. I was at the shop yesterday to approve the piece (monocle and all) and it looks great. They will be limited to 50 and selling for $50 so I’m sure they will move pretty fast. So come by and say hey. The fun starts at 1pm and ends when I get cranky and leave.
The prints are 17″ x 22″ Printed with Archival Inks on Acid Free Velvet Cotton Rag.

If you can’t make it to the shindig or are in prison you can buy the signed/numbered “Hamburger Hill” print on-line right HERE!
This is a pre-signed shot but ya get the idea…
As an added bonus I figured I’d show a pic of Alex and I (another rare pic of me minus my beer prop) from our Sparks Tour a while back at the Spawn/Todd McFarlane headquarters in AZ.
I’m heading to Orlando, Florida!
Posted in Uncategorized with tags art, Cameo Theater, Florida, illustration, juxtapoz, mural, N8, n8 van dyke, nate van dyke, Orlando, upper playground on May 17, 2010 by n8vandykeI’m really excited about this art show I am taking part in all the way over in Orlando at the Cameo Theater in Downtown. I’m one of 20-something artists who will be participating in this event. Each artist will be doing a 7′x7′ wall/mural and each artist will also be displaying other original art which will be for sale. This event is so damn big that it will have two opening nights. There is a lot of buzz around this event. I will only be in attendance for the opening night on Friday and will miss Saturday night. I’ll be more than happy to do sketches and talk shop so come on by if you are anywhere near it. All the info is on the flier below. I hope to see ya there!
