HELLBOY Turns 20

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 2, 2014 by n8vandyke

I was asked to be part of a big gallery show in LA which opens today, May 2nd at Hero Complex Gallery. The theme of the show is Hellboy, who recently turned 20 years old. I figured this would be a good time to get a little grisly and play with some paint. Below I’ve attached my original sketch, the final version and the flier. I will not be in attendance for the show, though I wish I were as it is sure to be quite the party with Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola on hand.

I was asked to be some work for a Moleskine Sketchbook gallery show so I decided to do a mole… skull. I’ve got the early and final stages of the piece.

First up is the pencil sketch…

Aaaand POOF! Here it is all finished up. Used a variety of mediums for this one. The final size is roughly 8″x10″.

The Evolution of a Color Piece

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 25, 2013 by n8vandyke

I decided with this mixed media piece that I’d take some evolution scans of it since people are always curious about how I go about an illustration like this. Enjoy the show…

Here’s the first stage… thumbnails until I find something I like…

Next up are the pencils after deciding on the sketch I like. This is being done in a 8″x10″ Moleskine sketchbook…

Here we have an ink/marker wash to lay down the foundation colors…

After that I lay in some quick inks and muddy up the colors a bit more…

Now for the fun part… finishing it. For the paint-over I use acrylic, gouache, color pencil, spray paint and paint pens…

Random illustrations and doodles

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 16, 2013 by n8vandyke

I figured it’s time to make a post of some of the random things I’ve drawn as of late. Here’s a collection of a couple of commissions and some other odd drawings I’ve done here and there. These are usually my favorite posts as they are just a melting pot of pretty pictures so let’s get the show on the road…

This one is a really rare breed of Gorilla. It’s called a “Silverback Gofukyurslef”. 9″x12″ ink on Bristol…

A sloth taking way too long to drink a beer. Baaaad Mr. Sloth! 9″x12″ ink on Bristol…

Ever lick a frog before and see imaginary sh!t? Me neither. 9″x12″ ink on Bristol…

For this piece I asked my Facebook followers which animal I should draw and a “frog” was suggested a couple of times among the 70 or so suggestions so I went with that and doodled this up in my sketchbook. “FLY-TINI”.

This one is a study of Alfred the Great who was King of Wessex from 871 AD – 899 AD. 9″x12″ ink on Bristol…

Next up are a couple of commissions. This first one is a living/dead version of the comic book character, Galactus, gripping planet Earth as if he is about to consume it. I figured I’d show the pencil sketch of it followed by the final inks. 11″x14″ ink on Bristol…

Last up is an 8″x10″ commission I did for someone who’s 1 year-old nephew goes everywhere with of all things… his toothbrush. This one is titled “Security Toothbrush”.

Graveside Trauma band artwork

I was recently given the okay to showcase some artwork I did late last year and earlier this year for the band, Graveside Trauma. They gave me a bit of art direction but ultimately just me me go wild with it. I did a cover treatment as well as a 3-way gatefold piece for the interior of the cd and a shirt. Here they are…

The album cover…

Here is the gatefold illustration for the interior of the cd (click to enlarge)…

This next one is the shirt design I did for them…

And as an added bonus I thought I’d show some of the sketches I did leading up to these illustrations…
